How it works

Find an English-speaking driving school

Utrechtse Rijscholen is an independent request platform, not a driving school. We do not provide lessons, instructors or cars. You tell us whether you need car, motorcycle, scooter or trailer lessons, and whether you prefer manual or automatic. We then look for driving schools in the Utrecht region that match your needs and currently have space. You can receive up to three offers, although sometimes only one or two suitable schools are available.

A 60-minute driving lesson in Utrecht usually costs between €59 and €78. Your final costs depend on your experience, lesson frequency, transmission and the number of hours you need. You arrange the price, package and lesson times directly with your chosen driving school. Requesting offers through our form is free and without obligation.

Worth checking

What to check before choosing

English during every lesson

Ask whether the same instructor can teach consistently in English, not just during the first meeting.

Valid instructor card

Check that the instructor has a valid WRM instructor card, which is required for professional driving instruction.

Clear package contents

Ask how many minutes count as one lesson and whether the exam, administration and use of the car are included.

Meaningful pass rates

Check CBR pass rates, but consider the number of exams too. A high percentage based on very few exams says little.

Good to know

Your route to a Dutch licence

Can you exchange your foreign licence?

Some foreign driving licences can be exchanged for a Dutch licence, while others cannot. The rules depend on factors such as the country that issued your licence and your personal situation. Start by checking the current exchange conditions on the RDW website. An application is generally handled through your municipality, which checks your documents and forwards the request when the conditions are met.

If your licence cannot be exchanged, you will usually need to follow the Dutch route with a theory exam, driving lessons and a practical exam. Do not book a large package before checking your status. Tell the driving school which licence you hold, when it was issued and whether you already drive regularly, so it can assess your practical starting point.

  • Check the current RDW rules
  • Contact your municipality
  • Keep your licence details ready

From first lesson to practical exam

Your first lesson lets the instructor assess your control, observation and confidence in Dutch traffic. After that, the driving school can suggest a lesson plan. You practise normal driving and special manoeuvres, meaning tasks such as parking, reversing and turning safely. The lesson car has double controls, which means the instructor can use extra pedals when intervention is needed.

Some learners take a tussentijdse toets, an optional CBR test that lets you experience exam conditions before the practical exam. You can also request support for test anxiety, refresher lessons or a herexamen, which is a new practical exam after not passing. Nearly half of candidates do not pass first time, so needing another attempt is common and not a reason to panic.

  • Start with an assessment lesson
  • Discuss lesson frequency
  • Ask about exam preparation

Learning to drive around Utrecht

Driving lessons in Utrecht can include busy junctions, large numbers of cyclists, narrow streets and tram routes such as the Uithoflijn. You may also practise joining faster roads around the A2, A12 and A27. In Leidsche Rijn and Vleuten, newer road layouts bring different challenges, including broad cycle lanes, roundabouts and changing speed zones.

A good match with your instructor matters because clear communication helps you react calmly and understand corrections. Use the form to mention your English level, previous driving experience and any nervousness. Also state where you live or study, whether you need manual or automatic lessons, and when you want to start. We use those details to find suitable driving schools with current availability.

  • Mention your preferred pickup area
  • Choose manual or automatic
  • Be honest about your experience

Nervous or in a hurry?

Requesting is free

You pay us nothing. You agree price, package and lesson times directly with the driving school you choose.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask about this

Can I take all my driving lessons in English?

Many driving schools in the Utrecht region offer instruction in English. Ask whether English is available with the same instructor throughout your course and how exam-day communication is handled.

How many offers will I receive?

You can receive up to three offers from suitable driving schools with availability. Sometimes there are fewer, because one genuinely suitable school is more useful than three random options.

Should I choose manual or automatic lessons?

Automatic lessons may feel simpler because there is no clutch or manual gear changing. An automatic licence receives code 78, which means you may not drive a manual car.

How many driving lessons will I need?

According to the CBR, learners need an average of 43 lesson hours, but the difference between people is large. Previous experience, lesson frequency, confidence and transmission choice can all affect your route.

What are the pass rates in Utrecht?

The first-attempt pass rate for Utrecht driving schools was 46.3 percent from July 2025 through June 2026, compared with 48.8 percent nationally. Check individual school results on the CBR website, but also look at how many exams the percentage is based on.

Can I start before I turn 18?

Under 2toDrive, you can begin lessons from age 16.5 and take the practical exam from age 17. Until your eighteenth birthday, you drive with an approved accompanying driver.
